African tour - guided self drive

After our highly successful Africa safari in January 2020 trip, we are teaming up with House of Travel Dunedin to run a similar trip in 2023 and are currently working on itineraries.

This trip is suitable for both photographers and non-photographers. Our self drive guided tour will take in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia and  Cape Town and Kruger National Park in South Africa. We will be self driving in fully equiped Toyota Hilux 4x4s with roof tents, staying mainly in camp grounds, with some accommodation in permanent tented camps, and luxury apartments in Cape Town.

Our tour includes one of the 7 natural wonders of the world - Victoria Falls. Here the mighty Zambezi River plunges over 100m in a spectacular series of falls over 1.6km wide. There will be an oportunity to photograph the falls from above in a helicopter. David has conducted hundreds of aerial photoshoots, and has published several books of aerial photographs, so can provide participants with the tips and techniques needed to get the best aerial images possible.

Our safari will take in some of the best game parks in Southern Africa, staying at campsites inside the parks - some fenced, and some unfenced meaning it's possible at some places wildlife will roam straight through our camp. At Okavango Delta we will get poled in canoes through a myriad of streams that spread out to make up this massive 2 million hectare, 400km long inland delta.

We'll do a walk to learn some of the bushcraft developed by San Bushmen from living in the Kalihari Desert for tens of thousands of years. In Namibia we'll go to the Skeleton Coast, where massive desert dunes plunge straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Further inland we get a chance to climb some massive dunes in Namib-Naukluft National Park, and if we're lucky get a chance to photograph gemsbok with a background of mountains of sand.

In the southern Namib Desert we'll see some highlights unique to Namibia - a desert castle, wild desert horses, a ghost town built in an area once so rich in diamonds, they were picked up of the desert floor as they glistened in the moonlight, and a remote German fishing village.

We'll visit Kgaligadi Transfrontier Park - a huge desert park around the size of Switzerland, famous for it's predators. In Cape Town we'll swap out 4x4s and roof tents for luxury apartments. Highlights here include a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain, and a trip out to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.

In South Africa we also take in the huge Kruger National Park. The park is suituated in the east of the country, and forms over 350km of border with Mozambique. Here there are great oportunities for photographing wildlife, and we will again have the freedom of driving our own vehicles, meaning we can stay as long as we want at each animal sighting.

At the end of the tour you will will have photographed some of the best icons of Southern Africa, in what can truely be described as a photographers "bucket list" trip of a lifetime.
